Rooted in her, Reaching through me 2025

Stanley Arts presents Reclamation: From Mother to Mother, the debut solo exhibition by Afro-surrealist artist Jungel Queen (Esther Ketti Queen Phillips), opening this October for Black History Month.
Rooted in cultural memory and emotional truth, the exhibition explores motherhood, identity, and the journey of displacement through vivid Afro-surrealist storytelling. Bringing together fifteen works—five reflecting on the meaning of home and ten inspired by endangered proverbs from the Oron language of south-eastern Nigeria—the show pairs visual art with oral tradition. Each painting is paired with spoken proverbs, accessible via QR codes. In addition, the exhibition will debut a soundscape archiving the voices of migrant mothers.
At once personal and collective, Reclamation highlights stories of survival, resilience and inheritance: mothers carrying home within them and passing it forward through memory, language and care. Alongside the exhibition, visitors are invited to participate in Name Me Home, a calligraphy workshop which will build a growing community archive of reflections on what ‘home’ means today.
