Ovu onu ugbarasuñ
Oron proverbs voiced by Joshua Osung, with thanks for his contribution.
(Ugbarasuñ is an insect that moulds soil into rock through sheer strength)
Acrylic on canvas, 80 × 60 cm
This work draws from an oral proverb that teaches how small, persistent actions create lasting strength. A mother raises the insect toward the sun, embodying resilience as both symbol and lesson, while her child listens closely — receiving not only words but the deeper inheritance of wisdom.
The scar-like markings across their skin echo ila, reimagined here as threads of memory that flow through body and cloth, connecting them to heritage. Through its vibrant red tones, the painting affirms that strength is built patiently over time, layer by layer, and that storytelling is itself a vessel of survival.
